Peter Singer is an Australian philosopher, working primarily in practical ethics. He is currently the Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University, and was named the ‘most influential living philosopher’ by The New Yorker. He is best known for his writings on global poverty, which have attracted controversy and protest. Notably, in his essay ‘Famine, Affluence and Morality’, he argues in favour of an obligation to help the global poor, and in his book ‘Animal Liberation: A New Ethics for Our Treatment of Animals’, he questions the societal norm of putting human needs above those of other species. In 2021, he was awarded the $1 million Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture.
