Benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and sedative-hypnotics are central nervous system depressants that work by enhancing the effects of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), resulting in anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), hypnotic (sleep-inducing), anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties.
