This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Pierre Hadot's book, Philosophy As A Way Of Life, specifically on chapter 11, titled "Philosophy As A Way Of Life" This video discusses the distinction he draws between discourse about philosophy and philosophy itself. He argues, using the example of the Stoics, that the parts of philosophy they distinguish (ethics, logic, and physics) are discourses about philosophy rather than philosophy as such, which is a "unitary act" of living and being.
