On December 27, 1991, Scandinavian Airlines Flight 751, an MD-81 known as "Dana Viking," took off from Arlanda International Airport in Stockholm, Sweden. What was supposed to be a routine flight turned into a terrifying ordeal just moments after departure. Unknown to the pilots, a layer of invisible ice had formed on the wings, breaking off and being sucked into both engines, leading to total engine failure at just 3,000 feet.
The pilots, Captain Stefan Rasmussen and First Officer Ulf Cedermark, fought desperately to control the plane as it became an unpowered glider. A hidden system called Automatic Thrust Restoration (ATR), which neither pilot was aware of, made the situation even worse by overriding their inputs. Against all odds, they managed to crash-land in a field near Gottröra, Sweden, with no fatalities. The media quickly dubbed the event "The Miracle of Gottröra."
The subsequent investigation uncovered shocking details about SAS’s de-icing procedures, pilot training failures, and a little-known aircraft system that contributed to the accident.
