In 1976, 29-year-old Lauren Elder made a last-minute decision to join a sightseeing flight. The plane took off from Oakland, CA, and headed to Death Valley for a day trip, flying over the Sierra Nevadas. Unbeknownst to Lauren, the pilot was inexperienced, no flight plan had been filed, no one knew exactly where they were, and he just made a catastrophic mistake that would send the plane crashing down into the Sierra Nevadas.
