With all that out of the way, Pokémon Red and Blue- 1998, Gameboy, the introduction to the world of Pokemon, and down the road, got a nice reintroduction on 3DS' virtual console with support for transferring Pokemon into the modern games. Red and Blue are a bit odd- they're a look into the childhood of their director more than anything- Satoshi Tajiri has said things along the lines of this game's world, Kanto, being based on places he could bike as a kid, tied into his love of bug catching, in obvious ways. The development of the games was never easy, they went through a ton of iterations before landing on what they became, although many of these revisions are long lost to time, but in the end, they had a weird magnetic resonance, combined with an aggressive campaign of advertisements via cards, toys, the anime, and began Pokémania- the peak of the series popularity wise, and the beginning of this messy, messy franchise.
