On 10 May 1967, World Heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali spoke to ITN's John Whale sbout his refusal to answer the draft sending him to fight in Vietnam. Whale reported from Texas as Ali, formely known as Cassius Clay, he appeared before the Draft Board. While Ali gave "no comment" to most of the press outside the Armed Forces Induction Centre, he later gave Whale an interview in which he spoke of his reasons for refusing to fight, and rejected the idea that he was in some way being "taken for a ride" by the Nation of Islam, the religious group of which Ali was a follower and through which he met civil rights leader Malcolm X.
