Prithviraj Kapoor was born on 3 November 1906[2][3] in Samundri, Punjab Province, British India, into a Punjabi Hindu Khatri family of the Kapoor clan, within the Dhai Ghar family-group.[4][3] His father, Basheshwarnath Kapoor, served as a police officer in the Indian Imperial Police in the city of Peshawar. His grandfather, Keshavmal Kapoor, was a Tehsildar in Samundri.[5] Kapoor's childhood was largely spent in Lyallpur, Punjab Province, where his grandparents and extended family lived. Later, his father was transferred to Peshawar, North West Frontier Province, and after some years, the family moved there, while retaining house and property in Lyallpur. Kapoor studied initially at Khalsa College in Lyallpur,[6] and later at Edwardes College in Peshawar.[7] Actor Trilok Kapoor was his younger brother.
Surinder Kapoor, the famous Bollywood producer and father of actors and producers Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor, was the cousin of Prithviraj Kapoor.
