The Purépecha nation is a thousand-year-old indigenous people that managed to impose itself on the Aztecs. They live in Michoacán, the name of this state means (‘fishermen’s place’), since its original inhabitants settled around large lakes, such as Pátzcuaro, protected by volcanoes.
We started in Santa Fé de la Laguna, in many of these Purépecha towns there are statues of Bishop Vasco de Quiroga, who after the chaos caused by the Spanish conquest, was sent to the region to pacify Michoacán. Quiroga favored the continuity of the remnants of the P'urhépecha culture, through the centuries.
We also visit Tzintzuntzan, to decipher the origin of the Purépechas and the island of Janitzio, which in Purépecha means corn flower.
