Negotiators from Russia and Ukraine are in Istanbul for peace talks, the first direct contact between the warring parties since the early days of the war. United States’ Secretary of State Marco Rubio has downplayed expectations, saying the only way for progress is for US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to meet face to face. The meeting was to have taken place on Thursday (May 15) but was delayed to Friday. Former US ambassador to Kazakhstan and Georgia William Courtney, who is an adjunct senior fellow at think tank RAND Corporation, tells CNA’s Asia First that Russia is showing “no interest in serious negotiations”.
