Besides the white casings, there are also dark granite casings at the bottom of the Khafre and the lower portion of the Menkaure pyramid. Up until this day the Khafre pyramid still has both white and dark casings. Why did the pyramid builders use two types of casing materials? Do they serve different purposes? Another interesting fact is that the earliest known descriptions of the Giza pyramids, written by ancient Greek historians Herodotus and Strabo from over 2000 years ago, recorded the dark bottom casing stones of the Khafre pyramid but they did not mention any white casings. Were the white casing stones fully intact during that time? If so, an entire smooth white pyramid reflecting the bright sunlight ought to be a fantastic sight to see and, in my opinion, totally noteworthy. But none of the ancient Greek scholars wrote about the Khafre’s white casings, or for that matter the Khufu’s.
