We all know what the red, yellow and green signals at highway intersections mean. Have you ever wondered what the signals you sometimes see along the railroad tracks mean?
Well, the systems are designed differently and while red and green have the same basic meanings, the systems are nothing alike.
This is a piece on the very basics of railroad signalling and what those signals tell locomotive engineers is going on ahead of them.
Remember, I am a signalman, not a trainmen and my explanations are a bit stumbly (can I say that on You Tube?) and I am sure some trainmen will have comments about it but I'm just trying to keep it simple.
So, join me for a short primer on railroad signalling.
