This film documents key archaeological findings at Rajgadhi Timbo, a historical mound in Umta village (Mehsana district, Gujarat). The site, protected by the Gujarat State Archaeology Department, reveals the remains of a substantial medieval Jain temple.
Rajgadhi Timbo, a 50-foot high mound covering 3,000 square meters, was once the site of a large Jain temple.
Historical Events:
The temple likely suffered damage during Alauddin Khalji's 1299 invasion of Gujarat, possibly at the hands of his generals, Ulugh Khan and Nusrat Khan.
Following an initial attack that damaged the upper part of the temple, the remaining lower portion was buried under layers of lime within the mound, presumably for protection.
Around 250 years later, Darbar Ummatsinh Rana built a royal residence (Rajgadhi) atop the mound.
In 1726, Maratha forces led by Kuntaji Bande burned the village, destroying the Rajgadhi.
In 1890, Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda State constructed a school on the mound.
In 1985, during demolition of the school to build a new one, the rear section of the buried temple was rediscovered.
The site is surrounded by a village.
