There are a number of benefits to helical gears like noise reduction and vibration and strength. the big downside I see include added weight. We know that this engine is going back to cast Iron block from the compact graphite Iron meaning the engine is already getting heavier and these gears are only going to add to it. The reason why this weight could be a problem is because the payload numbers on the Ram 2500s historical have been very low in comparison to the competition like Ford and GM. Ram did bump up their GVWR from 10,000lbs to 10,190 which should help a little but overall the payload figures with a cummins engines have dropped from 3150lbs to 2750lbs which isnt going to make people happy. Next is the gearing options (or lack off) that we are getting with this new cummins engine. 3.42 gears which I do not love, I wish Ram had included a higher gearing options for the 3500's. Next is towing, the 3500's max towing figure actually dropped by around 500lbs which is a odd, expecially considering getting a brand new transmission but I would suspect the 3.42 gears impacted the lower tow rating. for the towing in the Ram 2500 with the cummins engine it has basically remained the same going from 19,990lbs to 20,000lbs but we have to remember we are now paying an extra $3,000 and adding a new transmission with an extra 60 hp and 225lb-ft of torque so I would of expected to see a greater gain in towing capacity. Lastly is Price and well these trucks are not cheap. a lower trim level big horn with no options and the cummins engine comes to $70,000 adding taxes and financing we are looking at around $90,000 which is just not that affordable. the story only gets worse for Canada with the exchange rate likely pushing these trucks well over $100,000 Let me know what you guys think! 00:00 - Detroit Auto Show 01:09 - Helical Cut Gear Train 03:32 - Max Payload Figures 05:59 - Axle Gearing (3.42) 08:54 - Max Towing Figures 12:38 - Pricing $$
