You know it's a sign of the times when the most anticipated new dual-cab ute of the year is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) instead of a diesel. Enter the 2025 BYD Shark 6. Yep, the Chinese brand hasn't even played in the pick-up segment before, but it's looking to make its presence felt with cutting-edge powertrain technology.
So, what's under the bonnet of the Shark 6? Well, buyers are treated to a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, which combine to output of 320kW of power and 650Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 5.7 seconds. Better yet, an NEDC-rated electric-only driving range of 100km is on offer thanks to a 30kWh battery.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Tom White gets behind the wheel of the new Shark 6 for an extended test, which sees him put the Ford Ranger PHEV rival through its paces in everyday life, where it must play a variety of roles between work and play.
