Rashsundari is the first known Indian woman to have written her autobiography. Born in a Bengal village in 1809 married off at 12, she became a mother to 12 children. An extremely religious woman, her thirst for knowledge stemmed from her desire to read religious scriptures. She embarked on a path to attain knowledge rather surreptitiously. Her journey from a shy, illiterate and timid girl to a self-taught woman, who overcame personal sorrows , remaining steadfast in her aim displays her innate strength.
