What's better than 3 RDCs operating together? Well 4 RDCs operating together of course!
On November 8, 2024 the Reading & Northern Railroad ran newly restored RDC #9164 with the other three for the first time in an equipment move from Pottsville Union Station to Reading Outer Station.
#9164 was build by the Budd Car Company in Philadelphia, PA as #1908 for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in October 1956. It was later owned by MARC, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad before being purchased by Reading Blue Mountain and Northern in late 2022.
As luck would have it this happened on a day I was using PTO, so I was able to get out for the chase. And this was a special moment for me to because I did the graphics work for 9164. As a lifelong RDC fan, seeing this beautiful machine gleaming in the sunlight and running well was my best railfanning outing yet!
As cool as this is though, it's only going to get better as RDC #9165 is in the early stage of also being restored to operating condition. So stay tuned ...
