1981 was a wild ride for music, bursting with fresh sounds and unexpected hits. Some of the year's best songs came together through Mistakes, mysterious women, and a little bit of chaos. Jessie's Girl was written about another guy’s girlfriend…and when it hit #1 they tried to track the mystery girl down…45 years later they still haven’t found her find out why… another classic Steve Winwood hit was almost lost forever thanks to a major studio blunder when the engineer erased an entire drum part but in the end instead of freaking out, the legend put his head won and found a better way. Then there was Foreigner singer Lou Gramm who was struggling with a vocal for a song when the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen walked in the recording studio… it motivated him to dial his vocal to 11 and after he rushed to go meet the girl but she vanished into thin air. And find out how an AC/DC warm-up guitar part became one of the nastiest riffs ever! It was a year packed with legendary tunes and even crazier backstories from rock royalty as we countdown the Top 10 Songs from 1981 is NEXT on Professor of Rock.

It was a crazy year of mystery women, botched recordings, and happy accidents.
Let’s get the countdown rollin! At #10 on the Top 10 Songs of ’81 countdown, with a song about a mystery girl who’s never been found. It’s Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield: Rick Springfield didn’t expect a stained glass class to spark one of the biggest hits of his career, but that’s exactly what happened. He had signed up for the class alongside his friend Gary and Gary’s girlfriend. As the sessions went on, Rick found himself drawn to her—though, of course, she was already taken. That unshakable mix of attraction and frustration became the seed for “Jessie’s Girl.” Originally, Rick wanted to use his friend’s real name in the song, but something about it didn’t feel quite right. Then, as fate would have it, he glanced down at his shirt—it had the name of football player Ron Jessie on it. “Jessie” had a smoother ring to it. Here’s Rick Springfield with the details behind his biggest song.
They’ve searched for nearly 45 years for this mystery girl. But never found her"Jessie’s Girl," featuring a tasty guitar solo from Neil Giraldo, took a slow and steady 19 weeks to reach #1 on the Hot 100—one of the longest climbs to the top at the time. Once it got there, it held strong for two weeks. It became Rick Springfield’s only chart-topping hit and earned him a Grammy for Best Male Vocal Performance.
Coming in at #9, it’s words of wisdom from 38 Special with “Hold On Loosely:” Jeff Carlisi, Don Barnes, and Jim Peterik collaborated on “Hold On Loosely,” and I had the good fortune to talk to Jim and Don about how the song came together, including the title that was inspired by a popular talk show host. Jim had to sneak behind His Band Survivor’s back to write this classic. And who would’ve thought that a plate of microwaved nachos would inspire such a badass rock song.
