REFINE YOUR MIXED MEDIA PROCESS AND GROW YOUR STYLE In my landscape class “Mixed Media Collage and the Intuitive Landscape” I teach a method that helps you learn to just paint, not think or plan. It’s challenging, but really, for pure creative expression to flow, we have to develop a way to release those brakes, take away the editor and allow ourselves to make a mess so we can learn things. But as I recently developed a new process for my landscapes, I’m now realizing that there are subtle shifts that happen where decisions and a bit of planning are appropriate. Where these shifts take place will be different for every artist, and the particulars of their process, where it is in development will have an impact on when and where those shifts take place. In today’s video, I take you through part of my process—going from the initial marks and collage into the glazing stage—and talk about how I’ve realized that the mindset required for the initial marks and glazing is different than the mindset that will be required after. We all love a formula, but fortunately in art, none exist. At first, that can be frustrating, but eventually you realize that’s the draw, that’s the pull, that’s the adventure.
