In the past year, I have been working on transforming this tree into a single trunk tree and I would like to share with you the pruning decisions I have made along the way. Additionally, I will explain my thought process for the future development of this tree. This tree still has a long way to go before it is a beautiful Bonsai!
Kojo No Mai is a beautiful and popular cultivar of the Flowering Cherry Tree, also known as the Fuji Cherry (Prunus Incisa). Its flowers bloom in early spring and are a beautiful shade of pale pink with dark pink edges, and they have a delicate, almost feathery appearance.
In autumn, the leaves of Kojo no mai turn a beautiful shade of bronze and red, providing additional interest and color. They are a popular choice for Bonsai, as it they have a naturally small leaf size and an interesting, twisting trunk that lends itself well to the art as it can look quite old in a small space of time.
I think both the multi-trunk and the single trunk styles of this tree could have worked, however personally I felt that a single trunk looked nicer. With all of the trunks being the same thickness beforehand I felt that it was too distracting.
The soil mix used in this video to repot the Fuji Cherry is a mix of Pumice, Akadama and Lava Rock. However, the soil that is around the root ball does have some compost mixed into it.
