In March 1941, Hull suffered some of the heaviest raids of the Second World War in the city. Areas around Beverley Road were heavily impacted, including iconic and historic buildings such as the National Picture Theatre.
As part of the Beverley Road Townscape Heritage Scheme, we have been very lucky to meet Janet Baker, who was living in the Station Inn on Beverley Road in 1941. As part of our Beverley Road film series created with local filmmakers NOVA Studios, we spoke to Janet about life in the city during the war and her memories of the Hull Blitz.
The Station Inn has recently received improvement works as part of the Beverley Road Townscape Heritage Scheme, which is funded by Hull City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players. The scheme has included repair and restoration grants to local property owners, public realm improvements, and a wide-ranging community engagement programme which includes heritage walks and talks, work with local schools, the creation of a new heritage trail and collaborations with community organisations.
