Today, I’m restoring a mysterious object that my friend, a metal-detecting enthusiast, brought to me. This piece had been sitting on my balcony for over three weeks, waiting for its turn. Now, it’s time to bring it back to life.
The object was buried under a thick layer of dirt, so I placed it in a jar and filled it with warm water. After soaking for two days, the dirt dissolved, revealing a knife! The knife had a horn grip, though one side was missing. The blade was also heavily corroded with deep rust.
To clean it, I immersed the blade in rust remover, then neutralized the acid with a baking soda solution. I used a wire brush and hand-sanded the blade carefully, avoiding mechanical tools due to its thin and fragile areas. After reshaping the uncomfortable handle, I realized the knife had been crafted from a mechanical saw, but the hardness wasn’t sufficient.
To improve the blade, I re-tempered it in oil and carried out a full heat treatment. Afterward, I sanded it again and crafted a new handle. I combined beech and oak for the grip, used aluminum pins, and secured it with epoxy glue. Once shaped and polished, I tested the knife for you as usual.
