In this lesson, we will explore the operation of subtraction and rethink the concept of subtraction as the addition of a negative number. When we subtract numbers, we move left along the number line. Another way of thinking about subtraction is to add a negative number. Adding a negative is the same thing as adding a debt. Debt represents what we owe someone else - so adding debt is the same as subtracting from what we already have. Adding a negative number is the same as subtraction, and this will be very helpful when we subtract and add integers.
