Buxa Chogar: Revisiting the First Tibetan Buddhist Institute in Exile Through the Eyes of Three Former Buxa Monks
Buxa Chogar, the first Tibetan Buddhist institute established in India after the 1959 Chinese invasion of Tibet, became a vital center for preserving Tibetan Buddhism in exile. To provide a place for continued education, His Holiness the Dalai Lama negotiated with then-Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to transform a former British prison camp in Buxa Duar, West Bengal, into a sanctuary of learning. This nonsectarian institution would become home to 1,500 monks and nuns, all dedicated to preserving their threatened spiritual traditions.
We recently sat down with three former senior monks, now residing at Sera Monastery in Bylakuppe, to learn their firsthand accounts of life at the institute and the tireless work they endured to keep Tibetan Buddhism alive in exile.
