An unvaccinated child in West Texas has died from measles, marking the first fatality in the disease since 2015 . A resurgence has been noted of this potentially deadly virus after measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000. Most cases have been reported among children 17 years old and younger, with most cases in children under 5 years of age. The outbreak has now spread to neighboring New Mexico. Dr. Dana Hawkinson, Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Kansas Medical Center, discusses the current measles outbreak, its causes, and preventive measures.
