In this video, we ride from a small coastal town in Wakayama — a place that seems to be slowly fading, kept alive mostly by tourism to the nearby Nachi Waterfall — and head north along the coastline, toward the northern tip of the Kii Peninsula.
Along the way, we pass through some of the most beautiful coastal scenery we’ve seen in Japan: winding roads, ocean cliffs, and small fishing villages that feel almost abandoned. These areas are stunning, but they’re clearly changing — many homes are empty, and younger generations have moved away.
This is a side of Japan most people don’t see. It’s quiet, raw, and incredibly scenic — but also disappearing.
