The organ in Ripon Cathedral, England, has a long history that dates back to at least 1399. The organ has been rebuilt and modified many times over the years.
Early history
1399: The first written record of an organ in Ripon Cathedral
1667: William Preston builds a five-stop organ for £10
1690: Gerard Smith builds an organ, with some pipes surviving in the present Swell Organ
1838: Renn of Manchester enlarges the organ and provides a new case
Rebuilding
1878: T.C. Lewis builds a new three-manual organ, with cases by Sir George Gilbert Scott
1912: Harrison & Harrison begin rebuilding the organ, but are delayed by World War I
1926: Harrison & Harrison complete rebuilding the organ
1950: Compton converts the pneumatic action to electro-pneumatic
1963: Harrison & Harrison overhaul the organ, making changes to the Choir and Pedal Organs
2013: The organ is restored, including a thorough cleaning and repair of all pipe work
Additions
1988: A Solo Orchestral Trumpet is added
2000: A mobile console is added to the Nave
Gerard Smith built an organ in 1690; a few pipes survive in the present Swell Organ (stops 41 and 45). The organ was enlarged in 1838 by Renn of Manchester, when a new case was provided. In 1878 a new three-manual organ was built by T.C. Lewis, with new cases by Sir George Gilbert Scott.
