One of the earlier side-scrolling brawlers to feature on the Neo Geo, Robo Army features a group of cybernetic warriors out to prevent the machinations of maniacal scientist-cum-overlord and his army of mechanised thugs. Walking right and punching things a lot is the order of the day, and while I loved the game's overall aesthetic, the lack of a decent grapple/throw mechanic or more diverse combo system means this just ends up feeling rather samey. The ability to transform into vehicles is pretty cool, but I would have just preferred a richer core fighting experience.
That said, I can see Robo Army being decent fun with a friend, and there's no denying the fact it looks absolutely superb, and I have to wonder whether the visual style had any influence on Natsume's "The Ninja Warriors" on SNES. Regardless, this is a decent enough game, even if its longevity is questionable.
