#Disaster #NationalPark #Survival #WildernessSurvival With the many dangers of Mt. Rainier, crevasses are the ones climbers most fret. As the ice flows downhill, it breaks into huge cracks and blocks. These present unique hazards. Climbers can fall into crevasses, especially those hidden by snow. Most climbing parties rope up to rescue one another in the event of a crevasse fall. On June 19, 2012, five climbers from Waco set out to summit Mount Rainier, the highest peak in Washington’s Cascade range. Rainier, popular with outdoor adventurers, climbs 14,411 feet above the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day, it can be seen from Portland to the Canadian border. The group included Stuart Smith, a Waco attorney with a climbing resume that includes some of the world’s tallest peaks — including Mount Everest, and Ross VanDyke, Baylor’s Assistant Director of Admission Counseling, who had made a previous attempt on Mount Rainier, that was called off due to weather. Joining them were Smith’s niece Noelle Smith, Claire McDonald, and Baylor senior Stacy Liedle from Waco. After summiting Mt Rainier, on the way down, they encountered a large crevasse in the glacier known as a bergschrund. It was above the edge of the bergschrund that disaster struck. 0:00 Introduction 0:49 Mt Rainier 2:32 The Waco Pary Climbing Disaster 15:22 The Rescue 27:23 The Aftermath 32:04 Conclusion/Safety Tips Join the Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/OutdoorDisasters Merch now available! https://outdoordiasters.creator-spring.com/ If you haven't yet, please subscribe by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsrtvSjgVg8QgRJzysB55xA?sub_confirmation=1 Music by Scott Buckley "Omega" Video Credits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jqF1Vk2gh8&t=1s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRTj0-QZJsA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ywsv06eBsk&t=173s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWb40UEXGMU&t=101s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7eIDIRLDC4&t=35s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZhCFNrFRAY&t=65s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyAjfeuNj6Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C37IeDssRrM https://youtu.be/Jl-T5TYjug4?si=0zdOhirRnn1sGHVz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFSLXXls8_I&t=916s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDunxQcGQdo&t=261s https://youtu.be/T_IKFkgO_RI?si=gHpl1usrQVkUDcs5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lkt48E34Tno&t=234s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmWtCdJ1Fbw&t=10s DISCLAIMER: All materials in these videos fall within the guidelines of fair dealing/fair use.
