Rostov is a district center of Yaroslavl region.
Located 53 km to the South-West of Yaroslavl, on the Bank of lake Nero. A population of 31 thousand people.
One of the oldest cities of Russia, the official chronology leads from 862. With the X century Rostov was one of the centres of Rostov-Suzdal land. In XI — beginning of XIII centuries was part of the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality. In the Ipatiev chronicle in the description of events in 1151 called Rostov the Great. 1207-1474 in the center of the Rostov Principality.
On the territory of Rostov has 326 monuments of culture, a third of which are monuments of Federal significance. Rostov in Spaso-Yakovlevsky Dimitriev monastery founded, according to tradition, at the end of the XIV century by Rostov Bishop Jacob, who was buried in it.
The oldest building of the monastery – convent of the Cathedral, built by order of the Rostov Metropolitan Jonah Sysoyevich in 1686 In its interior are preserved frescoes 1689
The second temple dedicated to Saint Demetrius of Rostov. It was built in 1795-1801. in the style of classicism. In the interior of the Church is preserved a rich stucco and painting of the late eighteenth century, and the iconostasis 1869-1870
The third temple of the monastery dedicated to the Holy Bishop Iakov of Rostov. As the chapel of this temple is adjacent to the North of the Conception Cathedral. Jacob's Church was built in the years 1825-1836
The monastery is the center of honoring two saints – St. Jacob of Rostov and St. Demetrius of Rostov.
On the territory adjacent to the Yakovlevsky monastery is the Cathedral Church of the Transfiguration, the former Saviour monastery attached in the 1760s to Yakovlevskaya. This building was built in the 1680-ies in the style of local architecture-time Metropolitan Jonah Sysoyevich.
