Rowsley - The Village With Three Stations - and two of them are disused.

After a great day out on Peak Rail - where we start with our first Rowlsey station and the Rowsley South terminus of the Peak Rail Heritage Railway. We look at the remains and history of the other two lost railway stations that were in the village.

However first, walking from Peak Rail, we pass through a woodland where once hosted the busy Rowsley sidings. Dating back to 1877, little remains these days except for old photos and a few ruins of old structures in the woods.

The video shows maps of the locations of the stations and the points of interest in the village. The first station opened in 1849 by the Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Derbyshire Junction Railway. Back then Rowsley was a terminus. The line was originally intended to head off through the Chatsworth Estate, hence the trajectory of the original line and station. However this was not granted and instead when the extention towards Bakewell and Buxton was opened, it had to change course and pass through the site of Haddon Hall - Haddon Tunnel is another story altogether.

Therefore in 1862 a new station was constructed on the new line. The old station was converted in a goods station and yard. The 1849 station building remains in the centre of the Peak Village shopping complex, surrounded by newer buildings. You can see the marval of old building up close for yourself.

The 1862 station wasnt so lucky. Apart from Old Station Road, nothing remains. A car park now sits on the site. However stations weren't the only notable buildings in the village. Walking around the village now, you can see many examples of old railway related buildings.

The railway through Rowsley closed in 1968 upon closure of the Midland Railway through the village. The station itself closed in 1967.
