Most Of The Track Is Washed Out But The Short Line Railroad Is Still Alive! Trains Run From Norfolk Southern Interchange In Stearns To The Barthel Coal Camp. Listen to the small end cab locomotive working hard up the hill and watch the train go underneath us at the top. This is the Big South Fork Scenic Railway, a freight railroad and tourist hauler. It has a small freight yard near the station and freight cars are spotted for customers in a secure area with large buildings including an engine house. We rode the train and I show this area. Years ago I was in the engine house for a tour when they were taking a steam locomotive apart to start a restoration program. The day that I filmed this video the railroad was running only 3 miles of track due to flooding. That is a shame because the last time that I was here we rode the train all the way to Blue Herron where there is a large coal loading facility that you can actually walk on top of and it has a bridge over the river that you can walk over. Back then we also rode the train half way to Yamacraw where there is a huge concrete bridge that the railroad was working on getting the tracks restored to. We have been here many times and usually we stay in the restored company houses in Barthell. However, due to the virus they have been closed for a couple of years with the hope of reopening next year.
This video shows the train going past the interchange with Norfolk Southern and shows the yard tracks, station and scale house that use to weigh loaded coal cars. We also take a ride down the hill to Barthel at MP3 and return up the hill to the station at MP0. I walked down to MP4 to show the out of service track and filmed a caboose sitting on a siding by the company store. The ride is really awesome with a great view of the roaring creek below and there is a tunnel on a sharp curve. It gets dark inside the train as it passes through the narrow curved tunnel. The kids really got exited to see the tunnel. We had a two hour layover in the small restored town of Barthel. We got off the train and walked around the area and got to look in a couple of coal mines. We had a great time. The ride back up the hill was really cool because we sat right next to the locomotive and got to listen to it working hard up the steep grade.
