(1 Apr 1977) RR7713A RHODESIA DEFENCE AND EMIGRATION
In Rhodesia, the failure of the peace talks has given
renewed importance to the military situation. This
report looks at some of Rhodesia's defence forces:
the Light Infantry (seen in action on an anti-guerrilla
raid); black volunteers in the regular Army; the Grey's
Scouts (mounted infantry) and the much-feared
Selous Scouts, an elite corps of trackers who are
trained to be as much at home in the bush as the
guerrillas. Also shown are the effects of alleged
Rhodesian border raids in Botswana and the land
mines in Rhodesian roads. White morale, meanwhile,
is sagging, with more people leaving the country than
entering it. We talk to some of those who are going
and examine how the increasing pressures of military
call-up are affecting small businesses.
