(18 Jan 1980) STORY
The Lancaster House Agreement signed in London last December ended fourteen years of illegal independence for Southern Rhodesia. It has also brought about a ceasefire in the country's increasingly bloody Civil War. Until elections are held in late February Lord Soames, the British Governor, will endeavour to restrain the Rhodesian security forces and marshal the Black guerrillas in eighteen assembly areas. After this first stage it is planned that an open election campaign will be waged between Rhodesia's existing political parties and the factions of the Patriotic Front guerrilla alliance of Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe to decide the leadership of the country in its postwar reconstruction.
