Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2025 in New Delhi, Joel Kaplan, Chief Global Affairs Officer, Meta (USA); Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO & Managing Director, Fincantieri (Italy); Marianne Demarchi, CEO, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Swift; and S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, discussed the evolving nature of foreign policy amid shifting global trends in trade, finance, and digital weaponisation.
In conversation with Palki Sharma, Managing Editor, Firstpost, the panel explored how political decisions are influencing global business—and how businesses are, in turn, shaping political outcomes.
When asked whether India should consider weaponising trade or financial institutions, and if tariffs should be a tool of foreign policy, Jaishankar responded:
“Whether we like it or not, that is the reality. Countries are using them (tariffs). If you look at the last ten years, we've seen a significant rise in the weaponisation of almost every economic capability.”
He added, “At the end of the day, for a government, for a government’s representative, you fight for your business—because you're fighting for your people’s jobs.”
