From all the Brazilian rhythms, frevo is the easiest to localize. It's Pernambuco's prodigal son. We even know the city it was born into: Recife. More: we even know the neighborhoods in which it was first played. While Recife was being urbanized, in the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century, the first passos of frevo were taking place, on the busy streets downtown. In the fight for freedom, the workers of this city were cultivating a carnival that mixed marching bands with catholic processions and capoeira movements, creating a unique combination.
Modernity, powerful in promoting its conquests and cynical in relation to the violence it perpetrates, deeply affects the frevo community: the renovations in the second quarter of the 20th century will throw the workers to the outskirts. Downtown will be a memory of those old carnivals, of the period they conquered the end of slavery, and of the beginning of the republic. Once a year, during carnival, people return downtown and reclaim that place, playing, dancing, and drinking.
In the military dictatorship, Recife starts being one of the most notable cities in Brazil. In the search for freedom, they look for Olinda, which is very popular as a stage of an uninterrupted fight for discourse and body autonomy. Olinda starts being, along with Recife, the land of frevo and carnival.
Frevo emerges as a carnival manifestation and will never be separated from that. The party and the fire of these two combined are one of the pillars of the Pernambucano pride and the valorization of this culture.

This series was produced thanks to the Aldir Blanc Emergency Assistance Act, financial support for art and culture.
