Shallow draft or standard keel (deep draft) is some of my most frequently asked questions last month so I decided to share my point of view. I'm not a naval architect or engineer only a sailor, but share my experience from 4 decades of sailing. It will always be pros & cons with solutions and designs and sometimes compromises. Which compromises are acceptable depends on the different sailors' approaches to sailing, so it always surprises me when some present really strong opinions as the only truth or way to go. I try to share a balanced view even though it will still be from my point of view based on the experiences I have coloring my opinions. But some factors are easy to approach via facts and not emotions. I would say performance is one of the very few angles you can be very strict in the opinion as it's physically easier to prove by evidence. If some designs are better than others on the other hand depends on what's important. Elegant lines to some looks outdated to others just as an example. I have not talked too much about long keel as this is almost impossible to buy new today as most production yachts nowadays have moved away from this. Mass production Yachts or production yachts on a smaller scale is where the volume is, so this is also more interesting to discuss when it comes to pros & cons in solutions.
I promised to share more about my boat but could not find time to do it properly for this episode so decided to put it in the next episode.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I`m sailing around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 4 on youtube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor for decades. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.

I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore. I enjoy sharing my mistakes as well my knowledge and experience without trying to teach you anything.
