Honinbō Sansa (1559-1623) was a prominent Go player in Japan's Azuchi-Momoyama and Edo periods. Originally a monk, he founded the Honinbō school, which became a leading force in professional Go. Recognized as the first Meijin, Sansa received a stipend from the Tokugawa shogunate. He was the Go teacher of Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu, the three leaders who united Japan.
Rigen (1565-?) was a Go player and founder of the Hayashi lineage, a contemporary and rival of Honinbō Sansa. He famously played an exhibition game with Sansa on the night of the Honnō-ji Incident at which Oda Nobunaga was assassinated. He competed in tournaments hosted by Hideyoshi and Ieyasu, and received a stipend from the shogunate. While the ranking system was not yet formalized at that time, he was considered half a stone below Sansa, making him an 8-dan (Jun-Meijin).
