ภาพยนตร์ไทยเรื่องแรกที่ได้รับรางวัลระดับนานาชาติ จากงานประกวดภาพยนตร์นานาชาติแห่งเอเชียอาคเนย์ ครั้งที่ ๑ ที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่น เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๙๗ ประกอบด้วย ถ่ายภาพยอดเยี่ยม (รัตน์ เปสตันยี) กำกับศิลป์ยอดเยี่ยม (อุไร ศิริสมบัติ) และรางวัลพิเศษในฐานะที่เป็นภาพยนตร์ที่แสดงวัฒนธรรมของเอเชียให้ชาวตะวันตกเข้าใจได้เป็นอย่างดี เล่าเรื่องราวของ สันติ เด็กชายตาบอดผู้ถูกพ่อส่งไปให้เรียนรู้พระธรรมและอาศัยอยู่กับหลวงตาภายในถ้ำ โดยมี วีณา เด็กหญิงวัยไล่เลี่ยกันคอยดูแลปกป้องเขาจาก ไกร ผู้หาเรื่องแกล้งสันติอยู่เสมอ เมื่อพวกเขาโตขึ้น สันติและวีณาได้กลายเป็นคู่รัก ท่ามกลางความอิจฉาริษยาของไกร วันหนึ่ง ไกรได้ให้พ่อแม่ของเขาไปสู่ขอวีณาถึงบ้าน วีณาจึงตัดสินใจหลบหนีไปพร้อมสันติด้วยความหวังว่าจะได้ไปใช้ชีวิตครองรักด้วยกัน
หอภาพยนตร์ได้ค้นพบฟิล์มต้นฉบับภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ที่สถาบันภาพยนตร์อังกฤษ (British Film Institute) เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2557 หลังจากหายสาบสูญไปนานกว่า 60 ปี รวมทั้งพบสำเนาฟิล์มสำหรับฉาย ที่ China Film Archive ประเทศจีน และ the Gosfilmofond ประเทศรัสเซีย ก่อนจะนำมาบูรณะใหม่ และนำฉบับบูรณะออกฉายครั้งแรกในเทศกาลภาพยนตร์เมืองคานส์ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2559
The first Thai feature film to win international recognition. In 1954, the film participated in the first edition of The Film Festival in Southeast Asia in Japan where it won two Golden Harvest Awards for Best Cinematographer (R.D. Pestonji) and Best Art Direction (Urai Sirisombat) and also a Special Award for “the Feature Picture which will Best Disseminate Asian Culture and Increase Understanding of by the West”. The film tells a story of Santi, a poor blind boy who was sends by his father to stay and learn the lessons of Buddha with Luang Ta, a respectable monk, in cave. Vina, his friend, takes a pity on him and tries to protect him from the bullying of Krai. As grown ups, Santi and Vina have become lovers and Krai feels jealous. Krai asks his parents to make a marriage proposal to Vina, but Vina decides to run away with Santi in the hope for their love.
