Today we visited the MARAPÉ neighborhood in SANTOS / SP. We visited a new area that we hadn't seen before and the weather was sunny and the sky was blue.
Santos is a city in the state of São Paulo. The inhabitants are called Santistas.
The municipality covers 281.1 km² and had 433,311 inhabitants in the last census. The population density is 1,541.7 inhabitants per km² in the municipality.
Neighboring the municipalities of São Vicente, Cubatão and Guarujá, Santos is located 35 km south-east of Mauá.
Located at an altitude of 9 meters, Santos has the following geographic coordinates: Latitude: 23° 57' 42'' South, Longitude: 46° 19' 56'' West.
Santos is home to the Serra do Mar State Park.
Marapé
Founded on June 13, 1953, it is bordered by the hills of José Menino, Santa Terezinha, Marapé itself and canal 1, with an area of 1.81 km² and a population of around 21 thousand inhabitants.
Residents are served by the neighborhood polyclinic and the municipal schools Alcides Lobo Viana, José da Costa Barbosa and Padre Francisco Leite.
It is known for having the largest vertical cemetery in the world, according to the Guinness Book, for being a traditional stronghold of samba, with União Imperial, Real Mocidade Santista and the traditional Ouro Verde FC, and also for the Santuário São Judas Tadeu, a point of attraction for countless devotees and which for almost half a century had as its parish priest Father Chiquinho - Monsignor Francisco das Dores Leite (1932-2021).
The neighborhood's streets still maintain contrasts between modern and new, with old chalets from the last century and skyscrapers that form large condominiums.
Marapé, in Santos, is a residential neighborhood, with houses and buildings, many of which are still low-rise, with three or five floors. The region is steeped in tradition and maintains an air of simplicity. This appeals to both long-time residents and those who have recently moved to the region.
Marapé is located about 2 km from the beach, at the foot of the Marapé and Santa Teresinha hills. Due to its location, it has a milder climate. On the other side is Avenida Pinheiro Machado, canal 1 - it is worth remembering that Santos is crossed by seven canals in total. The neighborhood also has easy access to neighboring São Vicente.
Those who walk through Marapé will find wide, tree-lined streets, old houses and a mix of local and emerging businesses. Those who enjoy cycling can count on the bike path on Avenida Pinheiro Machado.
