The Sashiko method which you draw a grid and stitch along the grid lines is called Hitomezashi. They are useful for visible mending.

The Sashiko thimble I used in this video is handmade. It helps to stitch a running stitch smoothly and neatly.The particular one I used in this video is made with a metal covered button kit. If you want to make one too, please watch this tutorial:
