At one time, more than 200 pottery kilns lined the banks of the Mae Nam Yom in the area around Si Satchanalai. The pieces produced here came to be called 'Sangkalok', a mispronunciation of Sawankhalok.

Several barely recognizable kiln sites can be found along the road that runs north of Si Satchanalai, and a local ceramic artist even continues to fire his pieces in an underground wood-burning oven.

The Si Satchanalai kilns on the river Yom in north-central Thailand are to the north of the town of Sawankhalok.

I spent two very enjoyable days exploring the small quaint city and chatting with the very friendly and curious locals. There are two hotels within walking distance of the train station.

If you are looking for a authentic Thai city away from crowds of foreigners and the typical tourist hangouts Sawankhalok might interest you.
