LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Students will be able to create a mixed media art project featuring a scarecrow and draw a turkey using techniques learned in class.
ASSESSMENTS:
Students will present their completed scarecrow and turkey art projects to the class, explaining the materials used and the techniques applied.
KEY POINTS:
Understanding mixed media: combining different materials to create art.
Techniques for drawing: focus on shapes, proportions, and colors for the turkey.
Importance of seasonal themes in art: how fall influences creativity.
Use of colors to express emotions and themes in art.
Reviewing the steps of the art-making process: planning, creating, and presenting.
OPENING:
Begin with a short discussion about fall and its associated symbols (scarecrows, turkeys).
Show a vibrant image of a scarecrow and a turkey to capture interest.
Ask students: "What colors and materials do you think we could use to create our own scarecrow and turkey?"
INTRODUCTION TO NEW MATERIAL:
Watch a video tutorial on creating a scarecrow using mixed media (paper, fabric, etc.).
Discuss the elements of design: color, shape, and texture.
Show a video on how to draw a turkey, focusing on shapes and proportions.
Anticipate the misconception that art must be "perfect"—emphasize that creativity is about expression, not perfection.
GUIDED PRACTICE:
Model the steps of creating the scarecrow: choose materials, sketch a design, and assemble the pieces.
Ask questions like: "What shape will you use for the scarecrow's head?" and "How can you add texture to your turkey?"
Monitor student progress by walking around and providing feedback, offering help as needed.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
Students will create their own scarecrow and turkey art projects using the techniques discussed.
Encourage them to experiment with different materials and colors.
Set clear expectations for the work area: keep materials organized, respect others' space, and focus on the task.
CLOSING:
Have students share their artwork in small groups, discussing what they enjoyed most about the project.
Ask them to reflect on one new technique they learned during the lesson.
EXTENSION ACTIVITY:
For students who finish early, provide additional materials to create a background scene for their scarecrow or turkey, such as a fall landscape.
HOMEWORK:
Assign students to write a short paragraph about their favorite fall tradition and illustrate it with a drawing.
