Exploring the dangerous of The Hurricane Canal it is a 7.5-mile canal built by hand to provide water to the Hurricane Bench. The canal was built by men who paid for their shares in the canal company with their work and the promise of 20 acres to farm once it was completed. Construction began in 1891 and was completed in 1904.
In 1865, surveyors said that building a canal to provide water to the Hurricane Bench was impossible. However, in 1893, a group of settlers from towns further up the Virgin River formed the Hurricane Canal Company. John Steele of Toquerville and James Jepson of Virgin conceived the idea of a way to get water from the Virgin River onto the Hurricane Bench.
