David Lynch is well known for making films that often depart from reality. As effortless as he sometimes makes it seem, transitioning within a scene from normal grounded reality into some form of surreality is quite difficult to portray in way that allows the viewer to enter the world seamlessly. A great example of when this is done well is the 'mystery man' scene from David Lynch's "Lost Highway". This video covers some of the techniques that contribute to the transition from reality into this surreal interaction.
