This is Part 1 of three parts dedicated to chords derived from the Six Tone Symmetrical or Augmented Scale. In this video the adjacent string sets 1234 2345 3456 will be used and the examples are based on the A Augmented Scale which is an alternating series of minor third/minor second intervals: A C Db E F G#. The same scale at a major second/tritone/minor seventh above gives one all twelve tones (B D Eb Gb G Bb). The chord movement discussed here is in Major Thirds movement and the resolution points presented are also in Major Thirds movements. The scale is sometimes called a "Double Augmented" scale as it consists of two interlocking Augmented Triads a semi-tone/half step apart, in this case A and Ab Augmented (A C#/Db F and Ab C E).
The scale is used frequently by brilliant Jazz Musicians such as Michael Brecker and Gary Thomas and its first notable and extensive/consistent use is probably by Arnold Schoenberg in works dating back to the very beginning of the twentieth century. Schoenberg called this a "Miracle Set" and it has been reported that he wanted to patent it. It is one of the list of "All Combinatorial" twelve-tone/note sets created by Milton Babbitt.
This video focusses on some of the common harmonies found in the scale (Min/Maj7, Maj7#5, Maj7#9, and Maj Triad#9) and how these harmonies can act as substitute dominant chords including their resolutions.
This video series on Guitar Chords covers the concept of Four String Groups for Chords with no doublings. A complete study which will cover Major 7th type, Min7th type, Dominant 7th type, Altered Dominant 7th type , and Diminished 7th type chords with an introduction to voicings on the Augmented Scale/Six Tone Symmetrical Scale as well.
This study will be an extended series of video demonstrations that will help one master all the essential chord types on the Guitar far past the basic inversions of seventh chords, develop the ear, uncover a range of new chord spacings and a wide range of voicings with many unique voice leading possibilities, and develop technical control of the Guitar for writing and performance. Jazz, Fusion, and Classical players will find this useful and the applications to Solo Guitar, Composition, and Group Performance are limitless.
"The Chord Book" represents a unique new systematic study and not a random unorganised series of voicing examples based on stock patterns. Learn and master Guitar chords in a logical organised way.
