I have been scratch-building an overall canopy out of simple materials for my N Gauge station roof. Using only card, cocktail sticks, and inkjet acetate, I have built an overall station roof canopy for Chandwell.
In this video from my N Gauge model railway layout Chandwell, I show you the seven steps I went through to create this atmospheric station canopy with integrated LED lighting for my 1990s-inspired inner city viaduct based layout. I show you how I constructed the N scale (1:148) station roof from card and some of the smaller detail elements that I added to make the building come to life.
The station canopy itself was designed in Inkscape, and then constructed from eleven individual trusses made from three layers of 0.5mm card.
If you're interested in scratch-building model railway buildings from card in any scale, but especially N Scale, then I am sure you will be interested in this roof!
I love scratch building with cardboard. I designed the roof trusses and glazing in Inkscape and printed these onto paper stuck to card. The glazing was printed onto inkjet acetate and the station columns were made simply out of cocktail sticks.
I made a video of the process of designing the trusses in Inkscape here: https://youtu.be/rjIaM_yCQus if you're interested.
