The venerable ST-225, the most popular drive of the late 80s, and I finally got one of them!
This drive is probably one of the most common MFM drive you can find nowadays, but even if that's the case, they are usually really expensive. I got this one for 20€ (+5€ for shipping) which is a very good price for one of these, and it was tested too!
It is in decent condition, with 11 bad tracks (head 2 from track 6 to 15 and head 3 track 318), there is no bad track list label on the drive, so I have no idea if any of those are from factory or not. The bearings are (I think) in decent condition as well.
Storing a whopping 20MB, this drive is able to take DOS 5 + Windows 3.1 with no issues. Back then, people thought they wouldn't fill their hard drives up, nowadays there's drives that store 1 million times more data...
Unsurprizingly, the seeking sounds great, but I would expect that from any stepper motor based drive. This drive does not auto-park, that only became a thing with the ST-251, so it needs to be parked before turning it off.
The seller that I bought this drive from was one of the best I ever dealt with. Not only they properly tested the drive (reported to me it had 9 bad tracks on head 2 from 6 to 14, I found the 2 extra bad tracks by doing a deap write+read scan which I wouldn't expect the seller to do as they already did a full read scan), they also parked it and packaged it very well. If only all sellers were like that...
