Sebastian Stan: You have to love the process
aprilie 29, 2018 Judy Florescu
Over 1000 young film lovers came to Cinema Pro in Bucharest to join their favorite actor, and this was a really exciting thing to video shoot.
American Actor with Romanian origins, Sebastian Stan was a guest of honor at the second edition of American Independent Film Festival. For two nights in a row, Sebastian opened the screenings of the movie I, Tonya and was part of two sessions of Q&A with audience members coming from around the world – China, Indonesia, Greece, Turkey, Poland, Austria, and all over Romania, of course. These happenings were larger than life events. I have never seen such a fan mania ever since Johnny Depp came to play his guitar along with Alice Cooper. Let’s see what the lovely Sebastian had to share with us, the film lovers, on dreams, acting advice, best memory from Romania, being perfect through his work and so on.
On creating the characters inspired from real life in the movie, I, Tonya: As an actor you are always servicing the script, you are always going back to the script. And in the script I had to play him the way he said what happened and the way she said what happened. Those two things were very different. Margot and I were really trying to really find the good in these people, because there was so much negativity around them. So, we were trying to approach them by creating a love story of some sort. My character Jeff speaks very specific. I went out to Starbucks dressed as him once and the people from there looked at me in a weird way.
Love what you do all the time: You have to love the work, the process and that is the hardest part. Don’t look always for the results. I think it is important to have some respect for what you do. I think it’s unfortunate that actors don’t get a lot of respect anymore because you have personalities now that play themselves over and over again. That is not what drove me into taking on this career. It’s always the people like Christian Bale or Joaquin Phoenix, who are always different in everything they do. So, whatever you do to get you there is fine.
Professional inspirations: You can’t judge something in a certain way. We are not in the 80s or 90s. People are getting jobs in a different way. These are the kind of movies that are happening now. I would have loved to be around when Benicio del Toro or Ethan Hawke were starting out. They are incomparable. It’s a different business now. Whichever way can get you exposure is fine. People can get jobs from youtube or instagram. It is a different world.
Being involved into charity actions: We are all humans. When you get success, if you don’t find a way to get back, I really don’t know how else to fully experience that. I don’t see how you cannot find a way to connect with people that are less fortunate or in need of something. I have seen kids light up just seeing the characters from Avengers. Maybe it is worth shooting the whole movie for that experience. I grew up with a single mom and she worked different jobs, she moved to different countries, but she made sure that things were always okay for me. I think all that stuff leads you to believe in yourself in a way and to make you more humble, more aware of what you can do, so you can give back.
