Mr. Bones is one of those games that truly embodies the saying, "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts." I’ve said that about a lot of games, but few illustrate it better than this one.
On the gameplay front, Mr. Bones is hit-or-miss. There are some interesting ideas, but the execution is spotty. It’s a trial-and-error affair with a game-over system that can lead to serious frustration.
But the bizarre, oddball nature of Mr. Bones more than makes up for it. Creativity is dripping from every pore—or in this case, every bone. The way it blends music with gameplay, featuring blues rock that your dad would approve of, is something you don’t see often. Music composed by the great, late Ronnie Montrose.
One that more than makes up for its shortcomings on the gameplay front. It's a wild ride for sure, and unlike Mr. Bones Wild Ride from Rollercoaster Tycoon, you won't want to get off of. It's a short ride, and frustrating at times, but it sure is memorable.
It's one of those titles that only someone like Sega would've put out during this timeframe - the Saturn era. A timeframe of uncertainty of what did and didn't work in the industry. A case of throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. Few titles better demonstrate that than Mr. Bones.
